Monocular cues create far field depth

What Are Monocular Cues? Monocular cues create far field depth perception. Part of depth-perception is the ability to perceive the distance of an object. At distances greater than about 100 feet the retinal images seen by each eye are almost identical ,so when looking at a distance we are essentially one-eyed. Nevertheless we can perceive depth with one eye by relying on a variety of tricks called monocular depth cues. There are a variety of things that we use to judge how far away an object is.( Some of these cues can be processed by just one eye, which is why they are referred to as monocular cues.) The following are some of the most common monocular cues: Relative Size (size perspective) If two objects are roughly the same size, the object that looks the largest will be judged as being the closest to the observer. Texture Gradient: When you are looking at an object that extends into the distance, such as a grassy field, the texture becomes less and less apparent the farther it goes into the distance. Distribution of shadows and illumination: Patterns of light and dark can give the impression of depth. For example: lighter shades of color tend to be seen nearer. Motion Parallax: As you move your head or body from side to side, the images projected on retina move across retina. Objects closer than the object we are looking at seem to move quickly and in the direction opposite to your own movement. Whereas more distant objects seem to move more slowly and in the same direction as our movement. Aerial Perspective: Objects that are farther away seem to be blurred or slightly hazy due to atmosphere. Linear Perspective: Parallel lines appear to meet (converge) as they travel into the distance. For example, the outer edges of a road seem to grow closer and closer until they appear to meet. The closer together the two lines are, the greater the distance will seem. Overlap (or Interposition or occlusion): When one object overlaps another, the object that is partially obscured is perceived as being farther away. Familiar size: If we know from experience the size of a person /object,we can judge persons distance.
