Assignment Instructions Assignments 1, 3, 4 and 5: Critical Reflection Value: 10% each (40% total) Description The critical reflection assignments provide opportunities for you to explore your understanding of the content, concepts, and ideas presented in each modules course material and readings. It is recommended you complete the critical reflection activities once you have completed each module. The critical reflections are an opportunity to integrate the readings with the concepts from the chapters. The readings associated with the first few modules are foundational to the rest of the course. Initially you may struggle with some of the concepts because they are difficult, but as you progress through the course, you should begin to develop more familiarity with them. Later on in the course the required readings are often reports. It is not the intention for you to read thoroughly all the reports, but to peruse them and be aware of their content. For all the critical reflections, you will not be able to completely summarize the content of the chapter and/or readings. The task is to take one or two ideas from the module and the readings and show a good understanding and analysis of the concepts youve chosen for your critical reflection. Initially, you may find them difficult, but work through them and do the best you can. As you progress through the course, you will find them easier as the initial concepts will be applied to various policies. Remember, the purpose of the critical reflection is to show your instructor that you have read and understood some of the concepts of the module. The Critical Reflection Record you critical reflections for each assignment in a single file. Label each response clearly to assist the Open Learning Faculty Member when grading. When you have completed the five reflections required for each assignment, save the file and submit it for grading and feedback. Include one or two points comparing these approaches to the residual and/or institutional models. Ensure that you use at least one idea from each reading you have been assigned. 2.1 National Childrens Agenda Analysis Write 200450 words analyzing the National Childrens Agenda Discussion paper from an inclusion lens perspective. Think of the three key questions: Who is being excluded (or included) and from what? How are people being excluded (or included)? Who benefits from the exclusion (or inclusion)? Assignment 3 4.1 Public versus Private/Non Profit Service Delivery Write 200450 words on your perspectives of the differing social service delivery models. What are the benefits and challenges associated with the public, non-profit, and private models? How do these service delivery models integrate with institutional and residual approaches to social welfare? If social welfare is moving towards pro-market, non-profit managerial models, what might that mean for you as a future worker and/or for your future clients? 4.2 Community Based Service Delivery Friendship Centres Write 200450 words analyzing some of the concepts discussed this section of the course and in Chapters 5 and 6 of the text, using Friendship Centres as an example. Think about issues of citizen engagement, accountability, the community system of care, and vertical and horizontal organizational and community structures. 4.3 Anti-Oppressive Service Delivery Write 200450 words summarizing how a youth shelter is an anti-oppressive service delivery model. What is your perspective of this assertion? How could a traditional non-profit agency build anti-oppressive practices into their service delivery model? 5.1 Womens Caring Write 200450 words summarizing the issues for womens participation in the underpaid, undervalued, and underprotected caring roles they provide in society. Consider what social policy changes would have to occur in order to recognize the contribution of their social service sector provider roles in the market economy. 5.2 Catalyst for Change: Working at the Micro, Mezzo, and Macro Levels Write 200450 words describing how you would affect change at the micro, mezzo, or macro level for the emerging issue of bullying and cyber bullying. Make sure that you describe how the problem is viewed from the perspective of each level and the roles and interventions that social workers may be involved in. Assignment 2: Media & Social Welfare Analysis Value: 25% Media Analysis = 80% of Assignment mark Letter Response = 20% of Assignment mark A grading rubric is available for you to review. Due: After Module 4 Description This assignment involves analyzing TWO media articles from a social welfare perspective (different topics for each article are recommended, but similar topics are also acceptable); and writing a response to ONE of the articles either as a letter to the editor, or to a political leader (Mayor, MP, MLA), or to bureaucratic leadership (such as the Deputy Minister of the appropriate Ministry), or to an office of the Legislature (such as the Ombudsmans office or the Representative for Children and Youth). Media Analysis Select two recent news or information media articles published within the last year (different topics for each article are recommended, but similar topics are also acceptable) concerning a social welfare issue in Canada. This could be a newspaper article, magazine article, radio podcast (there are many on the CBC radio website), website (e.g., POVNet, Fraser Institute, etc.if you choose an agencys website, please check with your Open Learning Faculty Member before beginning your work). Provide a link to, or copy of, the media article you are responding to. For each article you choose, provide a maximum two-page (double-spaced, 12 point font, APA-referencing) summary and analysis of the article. There is no necessity to include a separate introduction and conclusion. Your assignment should include: A summary of the article that clearly expresses the main point that the author intends the reader to understand. This should be no more than two or three sentences. Identification of the political ideology and social welfare approach that is inherent in the article; ensure that you provide evidence of how you came to that conclusion Analyze the perspective of the article using an inclusion lens. (Refer to Chapter 2 in Chappell; and: An Inclusion Lens: A Workbook for Looking at Social and Economic Exclusion and Inclusion to assist with this analysis.) Provide a critical reflection of the authors perspective of this social issue. This may include identifying any critique of the ideas, inclusion of a missing point, or by providing more supporting information. Letter in Response For one of your chosen articles, write a response either as a letter to the editor, or to a public official such as a Mayor, MP, or MLA, or to bureaucratic leadership (such as the Deputy Minister of the appropriate Ministry), or to an office of the Legislature (such as the Ombudsman or the Representative for Children and Youth). Other choices may be available, but please check with your Open Learning Faculty Member. The letter in response must conform to the requirements set out by the organization you are writing to. This may require some research in terms of number of words and/or format. If you cannot find any guidelines, identify how you approached trying to find the guidelines. For the purposes of this assignment the response can only be MAXIMUM one page It is NOT part of the assignment to actually send the letter (or post it to any website). You can choose the content of your response while ensuring that it is consistent with being a representative of the social work community. It must be professionally written in a way that you believe will have the most impact. Submission Instructions Complete both Media analysis and the Letter in Response in one document. Use page breaks to separate the different items so it is easier for the Open Learning Faculty Member to grade each item. When completed, submit the file for grading.
